Tree trimming is the method of felling/trimming in built environments like streets, parks, gardens, and arbors. This service involves tree felling and pruning over a large region with a lot of trees. It also involves the disposal or removal of old-growth that is not desired by the customer.

The main reasons for trimming trees are to increase landscape appeal and safety. Street trees in an urban setting will need more pruning than trees in the suburbs. A chain is laid over a tree, attached to a hand crank attached to a chain saw, and two pieces of wood are split off from the main stem. Tree cutting charges are based on the number of branches cut per tree, the distance between trees, and how many trees are located in the line. Most state and local governments have laws requiring periodic inspections and certification for log splitters. An inspection report must be submitted to the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Service each year after the logs are split or chopped.

Another service provided by arborists is to prune. They will remove dead branches, thin branches, and any damaged or dying parts of a tree. The pruned branches are then marked so they will all be identical when new ones are planted in their place.
